Standards for Biochar

To have Biochar certified to a strong standard means the buyers can trust the physical and chemical characteristics of the product, or said another way, what the biochar will and won't do, and the impacts of the process by which it was produced.

The standard in use globally today was first published in 2012 by the European Biochar Institute. It has been progressively refined and made applicable for world-wide use. Now known as the World Biochar Certificate, it is the standard which underpins the certification of quality Biochar.

To become certified, every Biochar project must complete a Life Cycle Assessment before certification can be considered, then complete rigorous data collection to report that the required measures are being met. These in turn are verified by independent audit.

The transparency required to meet the standard gives buyers confidence that the Biochar purchased has contains only the documented elements and will be suitable for three classes of use: as a stock feed; as a soil ammendment, or, as a construction aggregate. Failure to meet the requirements of the World Biochar Certificate standard results in an uncertified product.

All Epic Char projects produce Certified Biochar, which is independently certified by Puro.Earth.

Measurement, Reporting and Verification are transparent, largely automated and to the highest standards
